Not all collagen products are formulated for athletes, bodybuilders & gym goer's... and that's why we've formulated our own...
Which Is Better, Collagen or Whey Protein?
A better question would be, "When, is better?"Some say collagen is not a complete protein source, but they're comparing to whey which is simply just a different type of protein with different benefits.
To appease the misinformed masses, we've added some the major "missing" components from whey protein to our collagen formulation anyway (Leucine, Tryptophan, Cistine, Calcium Citrate etc).
However,
Most people focus on the muscle building aspect of whey protein and completely neglect bone, tendon and ligament strength & recovery, then wonder why they get nagging issues in those areas all the time.
And that's where collagen supplementation comes in, where else do you get quality sources of collagen from in these modern days?
"I boil meat & bone broths" ... Nice! Good for you ... but not everyone wants to boil broths in the middle of summer making the house smell like a morgue.
Convenience is king in a busy modern day lifestyle.
Exercise, Collagen, Good Food, Then Whey Protein...
New studies show that collagen has about a 98% uptake available 20 mins post-ingestion vs whey (without digestive enzymes) @ about 10g p/hr after about 1.5hrs.That's pretty significant!
So we'd recommend a Regenerative Hydrolysed Collagen shake immediately after your workout, a good meal as soon as you get home, then (if needed) a whey protein shake afterwards ... which should act as a "slow release" mechanism until your next meal.
And the best thing is, the collagen shake (with water, milk or your favorite milk alternative) wont have much impact on appetite, so you can prioritize your meal as your main source of nutrients.
Absorption Rates.
As mentioned, collagen has about a 98% uptake available 20min post ingestion vs whey (without digestive enzymes) @ 10g p/hr after about 1.5hrs.
Hydrolysed collagen protein is already broken down and recent research shows collagens main amino acids (proline, hydroxyproline & glycine) are absorbed & utilized 20 minutes post-ingestion.
Building Muscle.
Whey protein appears to stimulate higher rates of protein synthesis, which may be due to whey's higher concentration of leucine. That's why we've added 1000mg of Leucine per serve with our collagen formula.
Collagen supplementation can help maintain a (more anabolic) positive nitrogen balance which also blunts catabolic processes (muscle loss). Collagen also strengthens the extracellular matrix of muscle cells, tendons & ligaments allowing more load to be distributed across the body part trained.
Injury Recovery & Pain Relief.
Collagen seems to have an anti-inflammatory effect on injuries due to it's high glycine content. Several studies show that hydrolysed collagen reduces inflammation, pain and accelerates the healing process in conditions such as exercise induced joint pain, osteoarthritis and tendonitis.
We also have "regenerative" (copper) peptides in our collagen formula, to aid the body's natural ability to heal.
Whey protein however, appears to enhance the inflammatory response by restoring levels of oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines.Digestion/Stomach Issues.
Unfortunately whey protein causes tummy & bowel issues for many. Because collagen is already "pre-digested" (broken down) it's easier on the digestive system, easily absorbed and there's little wastage to pass. You'll definitely notice the "lighter" difference, even with full cream milk, and consuming 5x shakes a day still wont cause major upsets for most, unlike whey protein, which can either create a "back log" or a "water fall" effect LOL.
Age Related Benefits.
The body's natural production of collagen begins to slow in our 20's and we produce about 1% less collagen every year after which is why collagen has been promoted for it's (visual) "anti-aging" benefits (for skin, hair & nails).
It's also important to note collagen's bone, tendon, ligament & muscle strengthening properties as we get older where accidents and injuries maybe more likely to happen & usually take longer to heal.If you train regularly and want to maximize recovery & minimize joint, tendon, ligament & muscle weakness, then this Unique Collagen formulation is definitely for you.
And it tastes amazing too, perfect for shakes, smoothies, cakes, breakfasts and you can even add to your morning coffee!
